Anna herself is a very diverse and versatile character who alone also shows how open-minded Disney was when creating this film. Even though she was shut out of her sister's life at a very young age, she was still, as a young girl, very driven and determined to get her sister to notice her through her song "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" as it depicts her life as she grew up.
She is also very strong willed and out spoken whether it be throwing a snowball at a giant snow monster or punching the man she thought was her true love. Disney princesses rarely speak out for themselves or the good of others but Anna is not afraid to voice her opinion and makes sure that she is heard. She has good morals and is a Disney princess who can stand up for herself. She doesn't let a man intimidate her or slow her down.
Some of her other defining characteristics are that she is very honest and humble as well as realistic and awkward. The morning of Elsa's coronation, we finally see a realistic, of course dramatized, image of what even a princess can look like after just waking up. Her hair is a mess, she's drooling in her sleep and snoring. Later, as she is finishing up her musical number of "For the First Time in Forever", she runs directly into a horse which results in her tripping into a bucket and falling into a boat about to fall into the ocean. This makes her all the more of a realistic person because she's not perfect in every step she takes and every move she makes isn't perfectly graceful- she's clumsy. Adding on to her ability to be awkward and fall on top of Hans, she says "This is awkward, not your awkward but just because we're...I'm awkward, you're gorgeous...wait what?" Anna is direct and forward and has no fears from jumping off a cliff to calling a man gorgeous. She is, in my opinion, a wonderful addition to the Disney princesses because of her versatility and ability to be a leading lady regardless of the men around her.
